The Skull - The Endless Road Turns Dark

Yeah. Fuck. This is a motherfucker of an album if there ever was one. Not only is this a motherfucker of an album and the best thing that The Skull has ever done, it might be on par with a lot of what Trouble did. Full of huge riffs, potent grooves and some of the best songwriting that I have heard in this genre in a long fucking time it's hard for fans of heavy rock not to be mesmerized. Sabbathian in scope, Trouble-esque in execution but wholly original, wholly driven and on a separate and exciting level, this is what makes modern heavy rock such a thrilling thing to me.

It's rare that you find a record that not only has such a deep understanding of what Black Sabbath were doing, cross all eras, not just the Paranoid phenomenon we all know and love. The Skull capture the moodier moments of doom, the hard rocking and of course the completely epic. There are songs you can sing along too, songs to headbang too and a general sense of boogie that makes this a phenomenally exciting listen. The song From Myself Depart features a solo that is almost danceable, and I love it. This is what rock and roll was always supposed to be about, and this doom metal supergroup executes on a stunning level.

The sense of dark and light on this record and the flow of the album is excellent. The balance between rippers and slowed down jams is exciting, the ballsy drama and all out sonic assault this album brings from start to finish is stunning. The Endless Road Turns Dark is an absolute masterwork and one that I am going to be coming back too again and again. It speaks to the perpetual power of heavy music, and though this album is wonderfully diverse that actually serves to make it all the stronger. Dig in.
