Cultes Des Ghoules - Sinister

It's insane to me that I have been a huge Cultes Des Ghoules fan for five years now. I remember when 2013's Henbane came out. I was in 11th grade. It was some of the most fucked up shit I had heard up to that point. I was further impressed with their 2016 release Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead Of Love. Then I discovered the back catalog and adored that too. Suffice to say, a new Cultes Des Ghoules record is a big deal for me, so I am pleased to say that these black metal weirdos have done it again, and it's so fucked up I could scream.

I think the raw weirdness of the band has maybe reached a new level here, the doomy horror of the band is at its peak. In some ways Sinister feels like a more serious version of Acid Witch. The demented madness and lurking horror of the opener Children of the Moon only sets the tone for what more is to come. This is an almost horrifyingly bizarre release. When Lovecraft paints dark images of loathsome flopping beings, this is the soundtrack they are writhing too. This is the music of a band who make you question your very spirit and sanity. This is the music of a band who reguse to play by the rules but instead enjoy their own bloodthirsty madness.

If you close your eyes you can almost see the band members feasting on rotted flesh. The twisted riffing, the stop start madness and the black metal assaults counterbalanced by bizarro doom metal infections serves to make Sinister a monumental achievement. It's hard to find a band who really make you feel things these days, who raise goosebumps, but that's what Cultes Des Ghoules do. They force you to confront our fucked up world and lap up the sopping wet rot. Fetid and blasphemous, Sinister is one for the ages.
