Sigils - You Built The Altar, You Lit The Leaves

Powerful art doom debuts are kind of a specialty of mine and I gotta say, hearing ab and from Long Island do a sound so near and dear to my heart does me good. There aren't a lot of good doom bands in the New York area of late so this is a cool thing to get to unpack. I also dig the fact that Sigils opening offering, You Built The Altar, You Lit The Leaves is self aware enough to come in at a trim 36 minutes - far too often doom debut just drag on and find themselves discarded. Suffice it to say, on paper, Sigils are looking pretty good.

All in all, though there are some serious moments of brilliance, and the last song on the record The Wicked, The Cloaked is truly great I'm not sure if I can totally back this. While I certainly appreciate the musical direction coming from that Pallbearer-y, Yob-y space the band doesn't quite have the forward momentum throughout to make this a truly masterful work. That being said, it's very much a damn good work, it's very much a work that will fascinate and it's certainly one that I made an effort to listen too multiple times. In this world of doom so many bands get caught up in dull stoner trope,s making it incredibly fun and exciting to find a group who break from the norm.

This is an enormously talented band and there are some super cool ideas happening throughout You Built The Altar, You Lit The Leaves, but I think that it is going to take a little bit of time for the band to be able to really differentiate and figure out a way for them to expand their sound, to build a future and find a way forward. This is a record that represents some interesting thoughts and hearing it become meatier and with more forward momentum, avoiding the meandering of this one, is going to be a true pleasure - I eagerly await their next offering.

  2. I don't agree with the comparisons made or the idea that they still don't differentiate. I don't pre-order the debut album of a band just after listening to the first single, it's the first time, actually...
