Misþyrming - Algleymi

Regular readers know that I have been a huge fan of the Icelandic black metallers in Misþyrming for quite some time now. Their cavernous sound and unique take on the Icelandic side of the genre is simply fascinating. This latest offering, Algleymi is just another gem in their crown. Only their sophomore full length the band has been able to once more knock it out of the park with this one, showing time and time again that they are among the brightest hopes on the star studded Icelandic black metal scene.

There is a melodic sensibility here that serves to make Algleymi a record you can't help but to love. The sheer scope of these tracks is intimidating and it pushes the listener to go back and spin Algleymi time and time again. To glean this records secrets requires a fair bit of dedication. Yet even from the first the bands brand of truly driven and punishing black metal will stun. The leads are beautifully arranged and the chord progressions remain vile. Misþyrming use this effort to prove that though they may have continued to evolve their sound they have not become fat on their previous successes. In fact this may very well be their strongest offering to date.

Algleymi is a record that you are going to get lost in. Misþyrming have proven that there are amazing new vistas of black metal that still need to be explored. Every passing moment with the band is another one spent getting closer to black metal absolution. This is a stone cold stunner, a record that continually demands more from the listener but rewards those who devote the time to it. What more could you want from a black metal release? It just speaks to the overarching power of what they have managed to craft here.
