Darkened - Into The Blackness
Into The Blackness - what a name for a record. And what a record indeed! Darkened feature current and former members of bands like Funebrarum, Bolt Thrower and Demisery it's clear from the first that the band has the pedigree. Their brand of straightforward, gutfucking dath metal is a blast to listen too. Even within their fairly traditional framework they are able to break out and bring some special ideas to light. Though a mere 16 minutes, these Edged Circle signees seem to be hinting at something grand.
When Darkened kick the record off with 'The Offering' a brooding synth padded death metal track you know you are in for something special. The transcendent dark magic of this record is fully aware of its own bombast and seems to continually one up past achievements. It's hard not to be enamored by the OSDM musings of an offering like 'Darkening Of My Soul.' It might sound a little trite, but honestly, bassist Daryl Kahan (The dude from Funebrarum) brings a standout performance on this record. His driving bottom end, when locked in with that of drummer Andy Whale (Of Bolt Thrower/Memoriam fame) makes for one of the more potent rhythm sections in modern death metal.
Suffice it to say - Darkened aren't brekaing down barriers here or blowing minds. What they are doing is putting out some damn fine death metal that fans of the genre and the respective bands of the core members are going to love. Yes there are some artsy moments, but there are also passages that remind death metal is, in their words, 'The music of insanity.' There's a lot to sink your teeth into in this quarter of an hour of death metal, ad the further one delves into the crypt the harder it becomes to want to extricate yourself.
