Dismemberment - Arc Of Ancients

It's hard to believe that it's been five years since Dismemberment's full length debut. On their second record, Arc Of Ancients the band unveil the next logical step of their sound. It's impressive stuff. The Ohio wrecking crew has crafted something far more dynamic than their first record and preceding litany of splits and demos might have led you to expect. The overall execution on Arc Of Ancients is delicious and while there certainly are limitations, this is overall a very strong set of death metal songs.

While I wasn't necessarily expecting so much Carcass worship I won't say that I don't like it. In fact, the Heartwork-esque riffage on a track like Once Forsaken speaks to just how far these guys have come as players. The angular playing on a track like A Path Beyond speaks to a Death influence, as does much of the vocal delivery .That being said, these guys make a point of not aping the old gods. While there is clearly a lot of love for early 90s death metal here, Dismemberment are not afraid to bring in more modern ideas. In some ways this is sort of a early 90s death metal record done through a 2019 lens.

The straightforward attack of Arc Of Ancients is a lot of fun. This is a band who clearly understand what they want to do and have taken half a decade to create some of the best death metal they could possibly create. There is a methodical approach here that is admirable. everything was clearly thought out and put together for maximum sonic impact. Dismemberment have used this album to show there is a lot more to the new wave of OSDM than meets the eye, and if you're not ready to hit the pit, you best get going.
