Regarde Les Hommes Tomber - Ascension

Isn't it great when we can square away our black metal album of the year early on? Such is the case with this masterwork from one of my favorite French black metal bands, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber. Their new record, Ascension is an out and out stunner. It speaks to the impressive talent of the band and seems to only elevate the dialogue around them with each passing song. The new colors that they add to their sound are thrilling and the deeper I delve the more I find myself enamored with the band.

Ascension manages to impress because of its ability to maintain the intensity of earlier Regarde Les Hommes Tomber releases whilst simultaneously bringing in a variety of new aspects. The moaned clean vocals for instance are exceptionally well done. Meanwhile the subtle synth padding of "Stellar Cross" adds a new breadth to what is happening within the bands soundworld. Ascension continue to thrill because of the sheer dynamism of its assault. It's a record that careens into the abyss and drags the listener along by their manky hair. When you think about it - what more could you really want from a record?

This is a masterful moment in French black metal and one that I am truly passionate about. A band who have followed my life since high school, Ascension sees the group unleashing new and exciting waves of raw rock fury. The understated swagger and distinct majesty of Ascension only add to the entrancing qualities it embodies. Regarde Les Hommes Tomber have taken things to a bold new level here. A record with countless layers, this is the sort of thing you can get lost in and stay enamored with for decades.
