Bezwering - Aan de wormen overgeleverd

There's been a lot of good black metal coming out of the Netherlands. It's actually interesting, Bezwering isn't the only great Dutch black metal band on Van right now either - they of course work with Urfaust and I just wrote about Duivel the other day. There must be something in the water! The point being - Aan de wormen overgeleverd is a masterful offering a work full of potent musical twists and turns with devastating shrieks, booming cleans and roaring guitars that come together to craft some gut slitting black metal.

One thing that really strikes me about this record is the sheer quality of the guitar tone. It really helps to immediately get the listener in the headspace for what this record represents. The demonic ministrations that shine through here are addictive and seem to continually point to darker futures and wonderfully twisted soundworlds. The 'Oogh' at the beginning of 'Nagezeten' really manages to win a place in my heart and speas to the bands unique ability to craft punishing rifs. Their sense of blending old and new is palpable and it helps to make Aan de wormen overgeleverd all the more exciting. Post metal ideas are able to run up against Celtic Frost worship - but it all makes sense in the larger context.

Aan de wormen overgeleverd is an exciting one. It's a record that is full of sublime rage but is also wonderfully composed and thoughtfully put together. In an age where so many records miss the mark or are simply not sonically interesting, Bezwering have pieced together something special. These tracks are reflective of the groups clear creative vision. It also reflects nicely on Van's long legacy of top notch extreme music. All this comes together for an offering that is hard to top and which deserves many a listen.
