Blackened thrash metal all the way from Sweden? Sign me up! Curse are one such wonderfully vicious act. Their high energy songs and clear artistic vision make for something really compelling. The Awakening... and the Old is a hearty dose of sonic hatred, coming at you at a million miles an hour. Curse are unapologetic in their assault and the more time I spend digging into the mayhem that they've unveiled here the more that I find myself completely in awe of what they have put together here.
The sheer rage that Curse bring to the table is palpable. The second wave of black metal worship that has come to define this band is exciting and over the top - the sort of harsh delivery that can't help but to fascinate listeners and leave us begging for absolution. The Awakening ...and the Old captures the imagination because of its ability to eloquently evoke some of the darkest moments from the genres past and then execute on them with aplomb. There aren't a ton of new ideas here, but the thrashy ministrations that make up the record will most certainly keep metalheads thrilled with what's going on.
The Awakening... and the Old is another testament to the general excellence of Redefining Darkness Records. It speaks to the power of this label that they so consistently pick winners and so easily are able to find top notch talent to bring to the table. This is an offering that I find fascinating, exciting and just a little bit over the top. There is a certain mystique to Curse that makes this record delectable, worth many a spin and demanding that you revisit even later. It distills some magical elements of second wave black metal and thrash into a satisfying whole and you can't miss out on that!
