Duivel - Tirades uit de Hel

I'm always impressed by bands that can take stripped down black metal and inject their own unique brand of sorcery to make it grandiose and exciting. The vicious and raw assault that is Tirades uit de Hel is a perfect example of this from Duivel. Once more Van Records has picked out a masterful act, a unique project with a clear and exciting vision that serves to cement the labels place as one of the best in the world. The go for the throat assault of Duivel is fascinating and their unique take on the genre remains thrilling.

Tirades uit de Hel is fascinating to me because while it has a lot in common with its brutal war metal cousins there are other elements at play too that serve to make for a more interesting offering. The songwriting is as a whole intense and monochromatic. The blistering assault of a track like 'Offerande aan de Schimmen der Afgestorvenen' only serves to strengthen this picture. The way the songs will then fall into lo fi synth magic is another exciting factor around these creations. The synths often feel unexpected and add a decidely weird, but most certainly wonderful layer to what is being done by Duivel.

This is a fiery offering and one that consciously evokes demonic imagery. As you find your skin being peeled off as you descend into their sonic hell it's hard not to be stunned by their execution. The simmering hatred and blasting drums come together under fairly primitive production to ensure a record that borders on the terrifying. Yet within that, especially because of the synth sorcery Tirades uit de Hel will kiss the transcendent and make for some truly compelling listen that demands you return.
