It's been two years since the last high powered album from Mantar. In that time we haven't had much to hold us over other than the 'Conquest Of Rats' single. It's good then to get to have new music from this vaunted German duo., This is a band like no other, aggressive, powerful and over the top. There is a thrilling magic to what they are doing here and it's hard not to be charmed by the outright heaviness and hard rocking magic of what they continually bring to the table. This is badass death n roll the way it was meant to be!
Grungetown Hooligans II charms in all the same ways Mantar has traditionally charmed. The songs are full of swagger and the tortured sludgy magic of these compositions continues to resonate within my soul. This is a band who have a lot of unique takes on classic ideas. The way that they mold their waves of distortion into something truly great is impressive . It speaks to a band who are capable of constantly evolving and bringing in new layers of sonic madness. There is a certain poetry that resonates throughout the record from the bluesy magic of '100 Percent' and the epic intro of 'Ghost Highway' to the blasts of 'Who You Drivin' Now'.
This is sludge metal with a touch of tongue in cheek. It's exciting and powerful, coming through with a sense of swagger that I think not many of the bands peers can really touch on. There is an anthemic power here and a sense that Mantar, if they really wanted too, could be emblematic of a new generation of rock gods. It's hard not to be charmed by the potent heaviness and tormented vision of this band. They are a blast to listen too, distorting Chuck Berry's music all the way to its logical conclusion.
