Limbo. What a perfect album title for what we are collectively going through right now. Things are hard. Perhaps harder than they have ever been. I think we are all frustrated with the general nature of reality at present and the grim knowledge that things aren't going to be getting better anytime soon. That's a huge part of what makes Garea such a perfect band for the time and place. Their brand of transcendent black metal is oddly soothing in a time when so many of us simply awaken every day to pure frustration.
Gaerea are one of a kind. What they offer up with Limbo is deeply emotional and heartrending black metal. The opening dissonant crush of 'To Ain' rapidly morphs into something much darker and given to driving devotees mad. There is a breadth to the songwriting here that is truly powerful. Gaerea can't help but to impress with their ministrations here. They have crafted something that not only captures the imagination but that seems to push the boundaries of the genre. Blast beats sit nicely alongside more transcendent moments. Yet this doesn't get lost in any of the prettiness of post black metal. Yes there are moments of beauty, but they seem distinctly tormented.
This is an interesting listen, full of dramatic and bombastic twists and turns. Gaerea have proven that they have a clear and exciting vision here. This is a potent record with a unique approach. They build on traditional ideas within the genre to craft something that is wholly their own. The sheer level of skill presented here is thrilling in and of itself and leaves me wondering - where will these Portuguese black metallers take their devastating music next? With this much potential they could do basically anything they want!
