Another Icelandic black metal supergroup? That's right. Why do they all ha e to be so awesome? Null rings together members of a few of your favorites including Misþyrming, Naðra and Carpe Noctem. Their new record Entity is creepy and powerful, yet another gem in the studded Van Records crown. This is a thrilling listen with a few really potent layers that has me coming back ever more mesmerized with what they have put together here. It makes for a truly fascinating offering that captures the imagination.
This is black metal the way it was meant to be, with a distinct 21st century twist. The decision to kick off the record with clean vocals was clearly a deliberate one that really lures the listener in before drowning them in the sheer bitterness that the rest of their music displays. There are a lot of layers here, something which is clear even from the first. The melodic line that sings over top of the arpeggios on 'None' is just a first glimpse at how deep some of the compositions here go and just how much there is to pick apart for spin after spin.
Entity is a masterful sophomore offering from a group of guys who have more than proven that they are among the est in the business. This is a band who are one of a kind, extremely talented and exciting to watch pull stuff together. You can get lost in the magic of Entity and the deeper you delve the more clear it becomes that Null are part of a new wave of black metal. There is beauty here but it comes through a much darker and oftentimes horrifying framework, guaranteed to make you claw at your eyeballs.
