Ok this album is a blast. I've been peripherally aware of Helen Love for years, but they always seemed a bit too bubblegum for me. However this brand new record, Power On is an absolute stunner. A loving tribute to 70s punk bands like X Ray Spex, Girls At Our Best and Nikkie and the Corvettes, this is an album full of big choruses and fun riffs. Nothing here is groundbreaking, but that's okay, because this is high energy and fun pop music done at the highest possible level. What more could you want out of a dance rock band?
It's strange in some ways to think about how we view this album as so fun and poppy, when 45 years ago it would have been incredibly dangerous. Yet that's part of the beauty. Power On is about reveling in the fun of punk rock. These are songs that you are meant to sing along too. These are songs that will let your heart sing and give you a sense of freedom even as we stare down the barrel of a hotly contest election and countless problems in our world. Power On holds no unwelcome surprises, but does leave the listener delighted with the endless musical references (The 'Shout it out loud' chorus on 'Power Of The Music' is a particular highlight) and songs that make you feel joyful again .
Though I certainly was not someone desperately anticipating this record, I have to say I am incredibly glad that it is the record I chose to put on today to review. Power On is a delight from front to back. Yes it's corny and a little bit silly, but that's why we listen to bands like this. This is a band who are going to swing you around and throw you in the air, simply to revel in the joy of being alive. Yes things are scary right now, but at least we have records like this one that remind us exactly why we fell in love with this stuff in the first place.
