The splits that I, Voidhanger records have been putting out are phenomenal. This latest one, a joint offering between Precaria and Oros Kau is especially impressive. Entitled Theosulphuros this is a split tht delves deep into blasphemous sonic realms. Furthermore, it completes a diptych of splits for Precaria dedicated to the concept of 'Theion.' That is to say the 'divine fire which transofmrs those who seek true light through darkness.' Are you with us so far? Ok good. Because on the other side of the split is Belgian one man black metal projects Oros Kau bringing his own brand of twisted chaos to the record.
Precaria kick off the record with their distinct brand of Mexican black metal. Though their offering can be dense, it very much adheres to some of the genres core concepts. One particular highlight is the bass playing which has an unusually high place in the mix and really helps to elevate the performance to a whole new level. I really love Oros Kau's side of things though. His sound is much more chaotic and borders on the terrifying. The demented droned vocals that highlight a track like 'Exorcisme Du Sel' for instance are stunning. They speak to the bands ability to conjure up twisted and oppressive soundscapes. This guy truly understands the power of the genre in all its twisted glory.
Theosulphuros is a thriller any way you slice it. Precaria ground the record in reality and embrace transcendent topics. Oros Kau push the needle more and leave listeners terrified. This is the sort of one two punch you want from a split, two bands who nicely compliment each other and drive towards wondrously bleak futures. This is a thought provoking offering from both parties and it speaks to the ongoing diversity and talent within this scene. Delving deeper into its many layers is just part of the appeal of underground black metal.
