Akhlys - Melinoe

 

Now this one is truly twisted. Akhlys aren't just a band with a difficult to spell name - they are a black metal band who seamlessly fuse second wave black metal ferocity with modern production and chaos. The end result is their wonderfully demented new full length Melinoe. This record sees the band going above and beyond, conjuring up vulgar images and leaving listeners quaking in their boots. This is black metal that gets to the root of the triumphant evil and hints at a future of skull melting and bleak music from the band. 

Melinoe is a stunner because of the simple breadth of the production and depth of the songwriting. The only track to dip under eight minutes is the six minute interlude, Succubare. This means that every song here is a deeply thought out masterpiece of intense listening, thoughtful execution and endless layers. The intricately pieced together blasphemy of an offering like "Incubatio" is delightful. There is a surreal poetry to this record. The execution on tracks like "Pnigalion" will leave even world wear black metal listeners in awe. "Pnigalion" is the longest track on the album, and surprisingly also the strongest. These tracks aren't long for the sake of being long. They're long because all the ideas fuckin' rule. 

There's a ton to sink your teeth into here. A lot of layers to digest and a potent magic to immerse yourself in. Akhlys have found a unique way to build upon black metals bloody history and the tormented offerings found within are glorious. This is multilayered and exciting black metal done in a unique and fun way. It's a record that listeners will remain entranced with and which proves definitively that they are among the greats right now.
