Kjeld are a Frisian black metal band who stun with their unique ability to fuse a love for nature with both atmosphere and aggression in their music. Their sophomore record, Ofstan is a truly impressive effort full of glimmering synth padding and epic guitar lines. there is a sort of abrasive torment that makes the band downright stunners and leaves devout listeners in awe of the tormented unrealities that Kjeld so marvelously craft. There is a bombast here that many bands in the genre could hardly dare touch and its truly thrilling.
Oftsan is sung entirely in Frisian. Throughout the album there is a very real sense of dedication to ones heritage and homeland that serves to make them so compelling. This album is fierce in its execution, continually driving towards tormented futures. However, their ability to bring in synths and the occasional chanted vocals gives the sense of something greater than the sum of the requisite parts. One might think a band attempting to fuse atmosphere and aggression might come off heavy handed, or overly contrarian. Kjeld are most decisively neither of those things. Instead they are just playing truly impressive black metal with surprisingly thoughtful execution.
What's been conjured up is an album that anyone can get lost in. It's a record that captures the imagination time and time again. It is a stunning follow up for a band who already impressed so many with their debut album and EP's. Ofstan is a thriller from front to back. It's a black metal fans black metal album. It plays into several sides of the genre without ever sounding trite. Instead they have found a distinct path to grow and mesmerize listeners. They have proved once and for all that Frisian black metal can reign supreme if we let it.
