The Plague - Within Death

The Plague is an Australian hate crew who have been branded as death metal for death metal maniacs by death metal maniacs. And I've gotta say - the presser is pretty much on point. The Plague are a band who wear their influences on their collective sleeve, however their influences fucking rule which makes for some of the most compelling listening I've heard in a good long while from a band who it is a delight to really sit down and sink your teeth into. Yes, there are moments of bitter insanity, but that only fuels the bloodcurdling madness of the rest of the record.

Within Death seems to most eagerly pull from the late 80s early 90s era of death metal. Fringes of thrash enter the mix, and the band seems to shy away from a lot of the Swededeath worship that infects so much of the scene today, even though those elements do pop up now and again. The blasting magic of tracks like 'Effigy Of The Rotten' is delightful, and it's hard not to be charmed by the execution and production throughout. There was a very clear attention to detail to give things an old school feel, but it's done with a clean delivery that feels distinctly modern. This blend of ideas is tasteful and a pleasure to lose yourself in time and time again.

Join me in the caveman stomp of this record. Celebrate the crushing might and wander into the timewastes. The Plague have done a truly impressive job of unleashing raw hate on Within Death and their unique blend of ideas is going to keep your head banging and your body moshing. This is what a death metal record is supposed to be about, huge riffs, tortured lyrics and a sense that you might just get your head sliced off. Yes - this will definitely be alienating to some, but for the rest of us, come on in, the blood is fine.
