Musk Ox is a really interesting Canadian neo folk project who bring in a lot of elements of chamber music to define their trademark sound. With deep ties to the metal world, there is a lot to really sink your teeth into with regards to these cats, and their latest offering, the momentous Inheritance is exactly the sort of beautiful and emotional music that you would expect from this trio. With gorgeous interlocking melodies and really well thought out compositions, Musk Ox have found a unique way to peel back the layers and prove their mettle.
Inheritance is exciting because it is a significant step forward for Musk Ox as songwriters. While past works where always intricate and interesting, it's this new record that seems to really push them over the edge and hint at new directions that the band can take. The guitar playing remains impressive with classical flourishes providing a colorful backdrop to the cello's and violins which frequently carry the melody. Listening as they interact on tracks like 'Weightless' is really a delight too - it speaks to just how talented these guys are as composers. It's just such a delight really immersing yourself in the gorgeous production and stripped down arrangements.
It's rare to see a band take it to the next level after 15 years and a whole mess of releases, but Musk Ox have found a way. Inheritance delights with its songs of the soul perpetually delving deeper and bringing listeners into exciting new soundspaces. Musk Ox have gone above and beyond here and it's exciting to see that the pandemic, as scary as it was, was able to help deliver some wonderful new art. Getting yourself really immersed in this as I have is more than worth it. Prepare yourself for when this masterpiece drops July 9th!
