Now this is a sick fucking death metal album. The Seattle death metal ragers in Drawn And Quartered clearly worship at the altar of bands like Incantation and Immolation. The chainsaw riffs that dominate this record are unrelenting and fierce. The balls out assault that has come to define their new album Congregation Pestilence, while certainly likely to alienate many casual fans, is a rare treat for those of us devoted to death metal orthodoxy. Drawn And Quartered punish listeners with crushing performances and fierce execution - truly the stuff of nightmares.
While the production here is certainly a bit rough, that's honestly a big part of the appeal. Things aren't supposed to sound great on a 90s inspired death metal record, in fact, the rougher, the better. It's such a delight to lose yourself in the slamming madness of a track like 'Oblivion Pilgrimage' with its massive fucking riffs and overarching sense of doom. There is a skull cracking potency behind these tracks that will bleed listeners dry and leave them desperately curious for more. If you're looking to really immerse yourself in the hatred then there is no better way to kick off your Sunday. It's blasphemy for the lost generation.
Congregation Pestilence is death metal the way it was meant to be executed, done at a million miles an hour and thirsty for blood. The headbanging ferocity of this record and the high powered drum assault make for compelling listening from a band who can't help but to leave you moshing. Sure, Drawn And Quartered aren't exactly reinventing the steel, but that's not really the point of a band like this. The goal here is pure nihilistic death, and they execute on that mission with aplomb. Losing yourself in the madness is a delight.
