Paydretz - Chroniques de l'Insurrection

Paydretz are a brand new French folk-black metal project on Antiq Records. Their new record, Chroniques de l'Insurrection is an ambitious and exciting record. It's an album that is fully aware of the regions history and which seeks to share forgotten parts of France's past. Orbiting the War of Vendée which took place between 1793-1796, a turbulent time in French history, this record takes you back in time and proves that the lessons of the past still should be listened too as we look into what seems like a bleak future.

The thing that gets me with this record is the quality of the production and the overarching vision behind the music. I love the folk melodies and the way the songs seem epic and larger than life. In some ways this is more of a folk metal record than it is a black metal one. The focus on the past and remembering half forgotten times is a crucial theme to the band. Chroniques de l'Insurrection shares a glimpse into a world that many of us didn't even realize existed, but which the members of Paydretz are surrounded by every day. As history comes to life with this band it becomes clear that this record is telling just another part of our shared human story.

Chroniques de l'Insurrection is a truly impressive record. It's an album that goes above and beyond and which consistently shows a level of black metal magic and elder fury that leaves me in awe. It speaks to the quality of the Antiq roster too. This is a thrilling offering, one that devout fans of the genre are going to love. It's a monster of a record and one that practically demands multiple listens. Letting yourself fall in love with the power within is a delight and is a nice reminder of the larger than life power black metal can have.
