Something I love about black metal is that no matter what year it is, the past stays alive. Classic elements remain important and vibrant. The underground continues to maintain its place in the scene as a twisted and marvelous place for devotees to really start to get lost in. Det stora tunga sjuka is the perfect example of that. It touches on all manner of classic tropes that help to shape the genre and seems eager in its willingness to dig back into 80s Scandinavian black metal and remind us why we are all so enamored with this music.
What Avskräde have done on this record that's so impressive is craft something that would fit perfectly next to so many late 80s classics. However - because they are doing it with 30 years of hindsight, it comes across with a level of maturity that I think many of the bands musical ancestors hadn't quite figured out. This album is a blast to get lost in and the all consuming power of Det stora tunga sjuka is enough to keep devotees of the underground coming back, lost in the secular haze of devastation that drives the blast beats and blazing guitars that shape this band. It's compelling, and oftentimes very gloriously executed stuff.
While there may be no real surprises on Det stora tunga sjuka it's a record that does a fantastic job of adding to the canon and reminding us of the true glory of 1980s style black metal. Getting lost in these cynical blasts and spiraling hate chamber makes for a compelling record that will keep you coming back. Avskräde are a masterful band and the more time I spend with this debut full length the more it seems clear that this is black metal the way it was meant to be done. Twisted, evil and at a million miles an hour.
