Isafjord are a stunning post rock force emerging from Iceland. Featuring current and former members of Sign, Pain of Salvation and Solstafir, this is a project that captures the imagination with elegant compositions and gorgeous production. Hjartastjaki is a wonderfully emotional and sonically deep offering that listeners are going to keep coming back too, leaving you increasingly thrilled with the breadth of what has been created. The sublime poetry of Isafjord is undeniable and sure to lure in many devout listeners.
I think what impresses me the most about Hjartastjaki is the way that the songs are able to draw from a variety of different genres as they draw you into their post rock brilliance. "Njlassaga" borrows from hard rock whereas a song like "Andvok" feels like much more of a ballad. Despite that they all retain the same sonic flavor and remain within the world of post rock. There is a very real sense of poetry that drives this record too, deep emotions and larger than life imagery that transports you to the craggy rocks and icy fjords from which this band draws its name. It's easy to get lost in this as these compositions have a somber sense of darkness that you can't look away from.
Hjartastjaki is a stunner any way you slice it. It's a gorgeous record that will leave you in awe and curious for more from these masters of the genre. It's hard to tear yourself away from the multilayered magic of what's been done here. These compositions and sorrowful and bold, powerful offerings that delve deep into the well of the human psyche and ask you to come to terms with your own internal darkness. Lose yourself in the layered magic with me and find solace in the shadow, there is little else to do in our world of lies.
