Morbikon - Ov Mournful Twilight

Now this one is a monster. Morbikon are a one of a kind force in the underground, a pandemic project from the twisted mind of Landphil Hall (Municipal Waste, Cannabis Corpse). This is a melodic black metal record done right, with a vision and scope that few of the bands peers can really match up too. There are very few strong black metal records coming out of the states every year, but this one is an exception, a monster of an offering that shows a deep understanding of the genre and hints at so much more that this band could be.

As a general rule the songwriting on Ov Mournful Twilight is beyond excellent. There isn't a single track here that drags and the riffs, solos and fills are all clearly thought out to perfection. Meanwhile, the vocal performance from Finntrolls Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns is stunning. He pushes his voice in so many impressive directions on this one and it's crazy to hear all that he is capable of conjuring up as he leaps from peak to peak. It makes for some extremely compelling listening that is going to keep you coming back in awe of a band who seem to understand the nature of the genre on a fundamental level and have no issue executing on it.

Ov Mournful Twilight is a truly impressive offering and I'd be really bummed if this just ends up being a one off. It's a record that feels larger than life and one that never ceases to surprise. This is melodic black metal done with a very real passion for the genre and a raw energy that is going to keep drawing you in. Morbikon have consistently shown that they have an understanding for this music that allows them to push things above and beyond, consistently impressing listeners and reminding us just how grand their scope is.

Pre-order the album!
