Bonginator are an interesting one. They first came onto my radar a few months ago when they were added to a tour with Escuela Grind. Since then, they've been in regular rotation for me, an excellent band who understand both the magic of slamming death metal and who have a fun 80s sensibility. It's hard not to be charmed by a death metal album that has full on synthwave interludes. Of course, when Bonginator are just playing death metal, it's pretty damn bitchin' and speaks to their ability to craft some wonderfully compelling rippers.
What's perhaps funniest to me is how this band, despite their stoner sense of humor (Track titles include "420lb Poop" and "Ritualistic Marijuana-Related Anal Defilement") Bonginator can drop a mean riff and deliver at an extremely high level. On top of that, this record just sounds great. Bonginator have been able to put together something here that feels larger than life, it's death metal that really leans into so many of the classic elements of the genre but also ties into the new wave that the scene is seeing with a wave of kids who are just trying to kick off crazy pits all across the country. It seems like Bonginator, for all their weird jokes, could quickly become a frontrunner in this scene.
The Intergalactic Gorebong Of Deathpot is silly, and that's ok. That's also just one piece of what makes this such a fun album. When it comes down to it, Bonginator understand the power of death metal in a way few other bands do. They've crafted something that feels vibrantly violent and is sure to keep fans of the underground obsessed. They tie into so many crucial elements of the scene that are cooking right now and are sure to keep listeners addicted to their resin coated ministrations. Get lost in this thing, it's gonna rule.
