Now THIS is a death doom album. Chaos Records has released some of my favorite death doom of the past few years, but this record is in a league of it's own. With Eye Of Water Tideless have found a way to completely set themselves apart. This is an album that is ambitious and epic in scope, a record that you want too, no need to come back to again and again. T's death doom done with panache, plumbing the depths of the soul and never becoming brutal for brutality's sake. It's a stunning release and one that only seems to grow with time.
The thing that really strikes me about this release is how gorgeous the production is. It's an album where you can find yourself getting completely loss in the vision and wandering through the sumptuous soundscapes that Tideless have prepared for us. The use of synths and other sounds (And maybe a little musique concrete?) to help pad out what's being done is incredible, and the extended moody passages that help to define this record feel intentional and bold rather than overblown the way they do for many of their peers. Tideless are truly talented songwriters and Eye Of Water seems to be an impressive and fitting next step.
Tideless understand the core elements of compelling death doom. Their ability to gently work in touches of shoegaze and more symphonic elements without getting heavy handed speaks to their brilliance. This is a record that goes beyond the fairly conservative purview of the genre without ever losing site of what this is supposed to be. Eye Of Water is a thriller and letting yourself drink from its depths is a must for any fan of the genre.
