For a quarter of a century now, Druadan Forest has been one of the premier names in dungeon synth. The flurry of work that has poured out of the project since 2016 has made them especially relevant of late though, and it's hard not to be charmed and mesmerized by their oeuvre. This latest offering Dismal Spells Part 2 - The Night Circus is an absolute tour de force from the project, endlessly highlighting exactly what makes them so special with its mesmerizing atmospheres and wonderfully dark auras. It's compelling and otherworldly as few albums are.
Dismal Spells Part 2 - The Night Circus is a transcendent offering in its own subtle and elegant way. Druadan Forest consistently seem to conjure up atmospheres of dark nights lost in the woods, hoping that nothing swoops down on you. But their work hints at more than that, with these anthems also sometimes reflecting a strange sort of happiness, as heard on the off kilter major key magic of 'Wizard's Hut'. Druadan Forest really are just transporting you to their fantasy world and it is truly exciting to get lost there. Sure, it's nerdy and sometimes a little bit whimsical, but it's dungeon synth, the dark vibes and sunlit sonic glades are exactly why we got into this in the first place.
Druadan Forest continue to impress on Dismal Spells Part 2 - The Night Circus. It's a record that speaks to the elegant poetry of this music and the clear vision that they continue to pursue. Let yourself get lost in this magic and wander for yourself among the dappled sounds of Druadan Forest. This offering is a one of a kind force and one that I think fans of the underground aren't going to forget anytime soon. Dungeon synth may not be for everyone, but for those of us who are enamored with the genre it's hard not to love a record like this one.
