Malemort-French Romances

Malemort's French Romances is a record that I've been meaning to review for a while. Their music is filled with fun NWOBHM styled riffs and lots of headbanging energy. With some really stellar production and great songwriting its really disappointing that this record has not take off as it is no doubt capable of doing. This is music done in the grand old style yet with a few more modern elements mixed in for flavor. this is just their debut album and as is it shows a lot of potential and shows the potential new heroes of French Metal.

The guitar parts on this record are very solid and feature a lot of riffing very much in the style of early Ozzy or even Iron Maiden. They are chock full of a manic almost punk rock energy that especially shows on songs like Atomic Diplomacy. The bass also really helps with these punchy rhythms. Some of the heavier parts could even be compared to Steve Harris's work with Iron Maiden. The drumming is very solid and filled with lots of powerful hits and nice fills. I particularly like the crashing attack on the choruses. Finally, the vocals are great, they are filled with a raw energy yet the singer can really sing. It finds a nice balance between punks' energy and metals' accuracy.

In conclusion, this is an album that is definitely worth checking out and is a blast to see done live. With cool riffs, charging rhythms and powerful vocals this is one of my favorite French albums of the year. Capturing the magic of the NWOBHM in 12 tracks of rock and roll insanity this is an essential for any French metalhead who wants to stay on top of the scene. As for you international readers, this is still a sick record that is sufficiently fun and interesting to be worth many a listen. Go check it out!
