Refractions

Djent and prog are slowly starting to peel apart. Prog remains for the trve music nerd while djent seems to be fading into poser oblivion. Refractions definitely falls into the category of prog. With strange rhythms and extraordinarily brutal breakdowns the proggy deathcore sound of Refraction has been devastating New Castle ears since 2010. In a nutshell, these guys could be described as Meshuggah but with John Petrucci fills, the musicians are brilliant and their raw brutality is constantly contrasted by majestic melody lines. The end effect is bizarre yet it works. I really love the solo lines, they are filled with power and give the songs a lot of flavor, they stop it from fading into boring rhythmic masturbation and allow it to become something more, a way forward. These guys have used their talents to create powerful prog you can mosh to. In conclusion, Refractions show the bright future of heavy prog, there are at once destructive breakdowns and beautiful solos and it is awesome!
