Black Table is an experimental metal band who have already have the likes of Metalsucks editor Axl Rosenberg and Dan Lake of Decibel Blog sing their praises. Suffice to say, this bands new record Sentinel is really good. Like, really good. In other words it seems pretty darn likely that Black Table will end up as one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) breakout bands of 2013. Experimental metal saw some great things happen in 2012 and I think that Sentinel is just an extension on that. With swirling riffs and strange song structures there is a lot to fall in love with here.
Their is a great harsh and unforgiving quality to the music that makes it especially addictive. Songs like To Tear Down find their stride in the strangely human female screams. That's another interesting thing about this record. While on some level one might say its strange and unlike most death metal we normally experience Sentinel has a sort of desperate humanity to it that shows the unforgiving nature of fate. Mysterious, beautiful and generally excellent Sentinel is at once abstract and very relatable. A sort of combination of extremes that rarely happens in the musical world. Yet when it does it seems to always result in a timeless classic.
In conclusion, for those of you who are looking for metal that is truly out there yet also has a pathway to the soul then Sentinel is the EP for you. These four songs are both soul touching and mind expanding. I think that this EP could very well be one of the greatest in extreme metal in 2013. The bizarre sounds of Black Table can swallow you whole and capture you in a web of sonic layers that allows no true escape. For the cutting edge of what experimental metal is in 2013 one must go and seek communion at this groups unholy altars, you won't regret it!
