Bulwark

Excursion cover art

Bulwark is a cool band from my home city of Paris... oh wait, wrong Paris, these guys are Canadian (From Ontario in fact). They have crafted their own unique brand of post progressive metal, fusing the elements of groups like Cult of Luna with more progressive acts. The end result is some very abstract and harsh music that is strangely appealing to a crusty old post metal lover like me. I think what makes this group so excellent is that they understand how to craft some really cool soundscapes with lots of black and white elements and vertical drops. Their clean vocals add a lot of magic to the music and fill the songs with a strange ethereal atmosphere, the growls add a certain layer of darkness and evil that reflects the chaos of the music. In the end, you have a record that seems to be a natural extension of the musicians, beautiful and powerful and not something you'd come across every day. Suffice to say, if you're looking for some cool new post metal then you need to pick up their EP Excursion as soon as possible, its a twenty minute post metal romp and if nothing else, it's free on bandcamp!
