Few modern metal bands charge forward with a carefree punk
attack anymore. This kind of punk/metal crossover hasn’t really been prominent
since the 80s. Yet here we have Pistol Whipping A Blind Kid (great band name by
the way) storming forth with this kind of reckless energy that blasts the ears
into oblivion. Their debut four song EPPBWK
(an acronym of the bands name) blasts out of the gate like the crossover
movement never stopped, showcasing the sheer power and magic that real death metal can have, even in 2013.
Here’s the thing about this record, despite all of the
crossover like attack there is still a certain unforgiving precision to the
songs. It creates order in the chaos of the tracks, keeping the listener
engaged, not by falling apart but by pulling together, faster and stronger.
Speaking of which, speed is a big aspect of this recording, there are lots of
tempo changes and this helps to make the songs feel far longer than they
actually are. The way it accelerates to a ridiculous speed before falling back
to a crawl is almost reminiscent of grindcore bands at some times. Yet it is
still inherently different, wholly
Pistol Whipping a Blind Kids own creation.
What I’m trying to say is PWBK is a fresh and exciting record that blasts through your ears and
rips off your skull. With innovating songwriting that at once gets ideas from
bands like Suicidal Tendencies while still making their own thing Pistol
Whipping A Blind Kid are one of the most exciting death metal bands that I have
heard all year. Not afraid to go crazy, but always dead precise this bands
development should be exciting. These guys are bringing out something powerful
to a crowded scene, something that can still appeal to the casual fan. Who
knows where Pistol Whipping A Blind Kid can go next?
