Lay Down Rotten-Deathspell Catharsis

Lay Down Rotten is a German Death Metal band who have been thrashing around, crushing skulls, and generally destroying eardrums since 1999. Laying down a rotten sound, (See what I did there?) reminiscent of bands like Bolt Thrower or Edge of Sanity these guys know what it is to rip out death metal madness at a million miles an hour. Their aggressive and patently throat ripping sound gets to the bleeding heart of death metal, there is no mercy to be found in the music of Lay Down Rotten, their new record Deathspell Catharsis provides only hatred and does it with a rage that is simply unthinkable.

One of my favorite aspects of this record is the crazed tremolo picked sections that seem to be rife with unadulterated death metal hatred. Songs like Schaedelberg really evidence this, their is an immeasurable amount of anger in this music and Lay Down Rotten express it with aplomb. Another key element of the Deathspell Catharsis is the simply excellent songwriting. A lot of these tracks tend to be on the longer end of the spectrum, around six or seven minutes. Yet they never leave you bored. Lay Down Rotten know how to write stellar death metal songs that engage the listener. Do not think though, these guys simply rip off others, Lay Down Rotten actually have a pretty unique overall attack, and this is what makes them great.

In closing, if you want a death metal record that will quite simply rip your face off and punish you with brutality then this is the album for you. While it may not be groundbreaking it is certainly a joy to listen too, and from the moment you press play you know you'll be in for a wild ride. So, when this record comes out in February, it shall be a good day for death metal, a day when the listening public at large is presented with songs like Zombiefied Electrified and Blasphemous Rituals for the Perverted Flesh and it shall be triumphant.
