Drudkh/Winterfylleth-Thousands of Moons Ago/The Gates

I recently reviewed the new compilation from Drudkh, Eastern Frontier in Flames. Well this new split, out today, between Drudkh and Winterfylleth, Thousands of Moons Ago/The Gates features several songs off of that record for their side of the split. Flip the record over and you get a new cover from Hatred Forest by Winterfylleth. The aura of power and mystery crafted around this split EP is impressive, showcasing the best from both bands and remind the listener why the might have fallen in love with this kind of music in the first place.

The crushing power of both of these bands is intimidating on its own, but when their prodigious talents are pooled together on one release, well then things reach a whole new level of metal madness. Add in the fact that all of these songs are overs of tracks from most kvlt and dark black metal albums of yore and you start to get a sense for the crushing and inescapable power that Thousands of Moons Ago/The Gates really has. Roaring ahead with a black metal might that is truly a force to be reckoned with Drudkh and Winterfylleth both reassert their dominance as pagan black metal warlords. These two bands represent some of the most exciting stuff happening in the scene right now, and hearing them together is most triumphant.

Both of these bands have done some great stuff recently and this split is in many ways the crowning achievement, the icing on the cake. This is their victory lap. So, if you want a release that demonstrates the triumph and magic of black metal in 2014 then this is the album for you. Not a lot of bands capture the spirit and magic behind the scene as well as these two bands have. This split is a fitting release from Season of the Mist, promising many good things to come in the next few months. Atavistic and unyielding in the face of adversity THIS is black metal, prepare yourselves my brethren for the metal attack!
