Empty-Etica Profana Negativa

This morning I got accepted to Berklee, screamed in joy, and then got yelled at by my math teacher, I don't say this to brag, I say this to show the sheer nihilism of life, nihilism that is expressed in its purest form by Empty. Their new record Etica Progana Negativa  is seven tracks of annihilating doom metal beauty. This is not an album that fills you with hope, or tries to make beautiful music. No, Empty are going for something hateful and pure, raw emotion that soars out of your speakers and right into the darkest depths of your heart.

But what really sets these songs apart? Well, Etica Profana Negativa  is a record that works on multiple levels. One of the most significant things is the sheer variety of vocals styles, from shrieks, to growls. Howls to atavistic and unholy cleans, it adds to an already mesmerizing soundscape. Speaking of which, the compositions, from an instrumental perspective are incredible, filled with emotion and all sorts of dynamic changes. The last track, The Tree of Dying Fruit is perhaps the best example of this, showcasing the bands incredible ability to use a variety of musical elements to craft something mysterious, brooding, and incredibly beautiful.

Etica Profana Negativa is one of the most prophetic, heart and soul enrapting doom metal records that I have heard in a good long while. In a crowded scene Empty stand out as a band who are wonderfully heavy, heart rending, beautiful, and simply destructive. This is what doom is all about, Empty get at the spirit of a genre that is rising fast, triumphant and grim. Prepare for your body to be taken prisoner by some of the most creative and engaging blackened doom metal to come out so far this year. Empty have arrived, and they are here for your head.
