Nux Vomica-Nux Vomica

Nux Vomica are the latest and greatest band to be signed to Relapse Records. Their debut album, appropriately titled, Nux Vomica is a crusty doom metal record that defies real genre barriers. The way that this group fuses punk, black metal, doom metal, sludge, hardcore, and more is simply surreal. There is no other way to put it, Nux Vomica have somehow tapped onto the might of the gods. An album that is diverse and completely unpredictable this is potentially the future of extreme music, passionate, and disturbing on a fundamental level.

To give you a sense of what this record is all about, consider this. These three songs last for upwards of forty minutes. Every piece has multiple parts and develops stark soundscapes that are frighteningly easy to get lost in. There is no real escape from Nux Vomica's attack, you simply have to keep praying for mercy. The way that they fuse emotions together in unholy matrimony makes for an album that requires many a listen to properly understand. Spinning it for yet another time this morning it feels very different to when I listened to it earlier in the day, and even more different than when I listened as I fell asleep yesterday night. There are simply too many layers here to be exposed in a few hundred words. To get at the spirit of Nux Vomica the only way to grasp the magic is to listen, listen, and listen some more.

This is an album that features long rambling instrumental passages, harsh vocals, and somehow, a stunning power to engage the listener. This is not metal that you just relax too, no, this is extreme music that haunts your nightmares for years on end. Contrasting drawn out passages with ferocious blasts there is no escaping the rising terror of Nux Vomica. Nux Vomica is one of the most unique and simply mind altering records of the year and I think that it speaks to the power of this band that they could put out something that is simply so promising. I very much look forward to years of great new releases from this otherworldly band.
