As you may have noticed, I go to a lot of shows, I'm really single (Ladies . . .), I don't have much else to do, and frankly I love it. Even if I wasn't trying to get views I'd go to these shows, because for me, nothing beats hanging out with a dozen of your friends in a small venue in the middle of nowhere. That being said, tonights venue, La BasseCour was actually very good and the team organizing the event seemed very friendly and professional. Also, in how many metal gigs do you get to chase after chickens in between sets? If that's not a draw, I don't know what is.
The first band up was the only new band for me, Adastrae. Their sound is pretty cool and I really dug what they put forth. These guys aren't afraid to mix a little bit of everything into their sound and as the set progressed I heard elements of black metal, death metal, and even a few touches of hardcore here and there. Another thing I dug about them were the guitar harmonies and extremely tight rhythms. These guys have obviously been working a lot to get this precise. That being said, I felt their stage presence could be improved, the vocalist didn't seem as into it as he could have been. In the end though, Adastrae were a lot of fun to see and I would definitely check them out again.
Next up where my friends in Sound of Memories. Regular readers know that I've seen these guys about once a month since December, so suffice to say, I'm pretty darn familiar with their sound. Nevertheless, I still find something exciting and new in their performance every time I go to see them. See, Sound of Memories are tapping into something greater than themselves with their music and their powerful melodic death metal attack punctuated with flecks of jazz and heavier trve death metal moments. Despite a few technical problems they were still a lot of fun. Flo is a dynamic and exciting frontman, keeping the audience engaged and smiling. These guys have a lot of shows coming up in the near future, you're going to have to check them out as soon as you can!
Thanatic Eyes is another band who I'm very familiar with, yet they too really bring the mosh when they want too. They are very much progressing as a live band and progressing beyond the muddiness that marked their earlier days. Unfortunately, this evening saw their longtime guitarist, Loic's penultimate performance. For months I've felt blessed by his stunning solos and powerful riffs, he will definitely be missed. Yet, as someone whose seen Thanatic Eyes quite a few times I feel like these guys will manage to transcend their difficulties and rise up greater than ever before. They're going on a break soon, but once they come back, they are another Parisian band you need to see live!
In conclusion, while I may not have gotten drunk, blasted, or covered in blood, this was still a really fun night because it captured all of the magic of the underground for me. Good friends, strange venues, and a simple magic that can only come from a dedicated and passionate group of young people doing what they love. All three bands are promising live acts and Sound of Memories in particular are a band who I feel will go really far. I'm probably just a hopeless romantic, but it's nights like these that show me why it's worth the whole darn human comedy perpetuating itself. But look at me, I'm rambling again. Check out all three of these bands and I'll catch you later on down the trail.
