Humut Tabal-The Dark Emperor Ov The Shadow Realm

Man, I have not had a good frostbitten black metal record to review in a while, fortunately Humut Tabal are here to fix that for me with their blazing new release The Dark Emperor Ov The Shadow Realm. Remember kids, if there is an 'ov' in the title, it's got to be good. Humut Tabal have a rather unique approach to songwriting fueled by aleatoric ideas (Where the music just kind of comes together by chance) and jazz elements, making it the sort of black metal that perfectly appeals to music nerds like me, and should very easily appeal to more casual fans.

I think the first thing that struck me about The Dark Emperor Ov The Shadow Realm is the way that right out of the gate you feel beholden to the almighty riffs that these Texans unleash. Driven by raging speed and ferocious vocals that are torn apparently out of Tartarus, Humut Tabal are not a band who you just listen too. No, they provide a complete experience, their shades of black metal enlightenment coming through rather long songs that fully immerse the listener. Humut Tabal have a great sense of their own unique sound and how to bring it to the fore. Through songs like Across The Boundless Land Ov Death we start to get a sense for the might of this band as a pure musical force.

In short, this is one of the most dynamic and refreshing black metal records I have heard in a long time, but it still very much pays its respects to the great records from the masters of yore. While you feel elements of Emperor, Satyricon and Mayhem in the sound, you also realize that with The Dark Emperor Ov The Shadow Realm Humut Tabal have found something greater. So let your body be taken in, your mind overcome, this is where trve metal warriors find redemption, in the occult and fantastic worlds crafted by Texas's best black metal group.
