Nihilo-Dum Spiro Spero

Nihilo are the kind of death metal band who are unashamed in their old school worship. That being said, Nihilo also bring a new level of evil to the table, innovating upon classic concepts. Their ten years of working together has set them up as one of Sweden's hardest working bands, and the raw evil contained within the ten tracks of Dum Spiro Spero is delicious. So here we are, a group with sick cover art and even better riffs, ready to rock our socks off and show us the true meaning of death metal. Prepare yourself, you're going to get chopped to shreds.

Right off the bat, the opening riff of On The Brink shows us that Nihilo are not messing around. The buzzing chug that dominates the guitar laden attack of Dum Spiro Spero is unmistakable Swedish death metal madness. While the production is fairly decent, it manages to remain raw enough such that Nihilo keep the true spirit of the underground throughout. The growls are guttural, and oftentimes a little bit terrifying, this is the sort of pure unadulterated evil that we need in the most unholy of metals. Nihilo get the nihilistic holocaust that makes Swedish death metal so sweet. Falling into the apocalyptic void they have crafted is a rare and magical treat.

Dum Spiro Spero is not a record you are going to show your mother, or really anyone who is uninitiated to trve and pvre death metal. No, this is a record for us warriors, purists, men who will not stand down, but only praise the triumphant glories of the old gods. As I spin this record for the umpteenth time today, I feel like I'm starting to get a sense for something greater, Nihilo are onto something a big grander than your traditional death metal guts and gore. They want us to realize the terror of our existence, and then somehow keep on going.
