Monolord - Vaenir

My first reaction upon hearing Monolord was "Why has no one showed me this glorious band before?" The kind of band who are sublime in their brutality and able to get you lost in vivid soundworlds their new record Vaenir is almost inspirational in the way it carries the listener forward and guides them to a fateful, touching conclusion. Understandable from the first listen yet worth many more, this is the kind of doom metal record that reminds me why I fell in love with the genre and let it shape my life.

The moody atmospherics created in this track are just as important as some of the crushing riffs. The way that a song like Venir can carry you away to a strange and mystical land before dumping you right back into the world of bone melting riffs is impressive, it speaks to how strong Monolord are as songwriters. I can say without a doubt that this is one of my favorite doom records to come out in a good long while, simply because the guys in Monolord so deeply understand the aesthetic of doom. The emotional appeal of Vaenir is touching and leaves you a stronger person, more ready and willing to deal with the darkness that comes before the dawn.

This is the sort of record that has an almost trippy vibe. It carries you through the records six songs. By the time you get to the end you hardly know what has happened to you. I know I'm pretty much always on a doom metal kick, but this has encouraged me to get even deeper. Monolord are living proof that beyond every corner and under every rock you can find another kickass band who are actually remarkably popular. Monolord have found their own route in the world of doom, so let the void embrace you.
