Cloud Rat - Qliphoth

Cloud Rat have reached a point in the cultural zeitgeist where everyone who is anyone in heavy music knows that as soon as these dudes put out a record it's probably going to be one of the most important of the year. Such is the case with Qliphoth, herein is a band who are simply insane - incredibly vicious yet also really intelligent and thought provoking. There is a music depth to what Cloud Rat do that few of their peers can emulate. This is a band who violate the rules and turn you on to a deeper, darker reality.

The sense of inhuman groove that gives so much flavor to Qliphoth is only the first layer into what makes this record so epic. From the grandiose lyrics to the strangely inspiring interludes found on tracks like Thin Vein we find that Cloud Rat have the ability to grind you into a dust. The sense of evil and grimace worthy destruction is directly counteracted by the bands taste for spaced out moments that give this record so much flavor. The spirit of contradiction that defines Cloud Rat is an attitude that I think is going to guide grind in general towards a better future - proving there are great things to come for a genre once seen as 'dead'.

This is a band who seek to move past what punk means today and turn it into something transcendent. Cloud Rat are all powerful grind lords who are perhaps the logical heirs to Gridlink. In the last few years we've seen this genre turned on its head and Qlipoth is just another step in the ascension. It would be easy to call this record one of those peaks that represents the pinnacle of modern grind, yet given Cloud Rats progression over the last few years I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to say that these guys might just get better.
