Those of you who don't know the mystery of Somerton Man are missing out, it's one of the creepiest horror stories of our times. Yet within all its inherent terror and mystery (Which I won't delve into here, google it ya punk) there was also something strangely magical. I like to think that this is what Harmonic Cross are trying to capture on It Is Finished. The strangely heavy and completely unsettling sounds found on this record will leave you shuddering simply because what Harmonic Cross do on this record is inherently fucked up, and too terrifying for words.
The fact of the matter is that It Is Finished almost feels like Metal Machine Music. There is something here that grates at the human subconscious and sets you on edge. It creates a very visceral reaction and it's really hard to come to terms with what these guys are doing. The brooding soundscapes found on this album foster the question "Can this even be called music?" And yet beyond that Harmonic Cross are turned on to the sheer creepiness found in the Somerton Man story. In a strange way their entirely electronic sounds manage to communicate an incredibly complex and multilayered story.
Sure, It Is Finished won't be for everyone, but it was never intended to be. Harmonic Cross is definitely fucked up at it's very root and that's part of why this record remains so strangely beautiful. It's rare that you find something that sounds so pretty and yet leaves you feeling so scared, and that is the triumph of It Is Finished. This record becomes transcendent because it taps into some of the most demented corners of what it means to be human and will leave you biting your fingernails and praying for solace.
