Esben And The Witch - Older Terrors

Esben And The Witch are a perfect example of Season Of Mists growing shift towards covering more atmospheric and eerie music. Their latest offering Older Terrors invokes exactly that. It's a strangely mystical album that's forces you to look at a twisted reality and embrace a weird side of the world. It shows us the inherent bitterness, the seas of putrefaction that the band seems to sail across so easily perfectly represent the darker side of humanity and the morbid beauty of this band. It's hard not to fall in love with what they have done here.

There is something beautifully surreal about the soundscapes on Older Terrors. The fact that it only takes four songs to communicate their full message only adds to the glory. Of course all of the songs are extremely long, but the ebb and flow that each represents takes you on an epic journey. Esben And The Witch are songwriting masters, their music is impossible not to fall in love with - you find yourself just wanting to dig deeper. I love finding bands who just have so much to offer, every time you think you've picked Older Terrors apart you can come back and find that there is still so much more to understand.

Older Terrors showcases an immensely talented band (Just listen to those wails!) who understand the aesthetic of bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but fuse it with the esoterica of Wrekmeister Harmonies and ground it in the earthy majesty of Jex Thoth. This is an album that you find yourself lost in, drowning under waves of sound and a strangely reassuring sense of forward motion. Even as the chords wash over you you feel relieved, as if all your former struggles have been let go and you can find absolution.
