Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive

Mayhem are and always have been an extremely special band. They are the first and they will be the last. They are a black metal band for the ages and a group who seem like they are going to ring out over the ages, and now we have a live document of their first full performance of their classic and immortal record De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas on a release appropriately titled De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive and by God does it rage. Mayhem prove once more that they are the lords of black metal fury.

As with any live record the production is the most important part and on this release Mayhem sound simply magical. The drums ring out powerfully and Attila is clearly back on top of his game. The driving magic and punishing balls out assault of the guitars will entrance you. The groups trademark frog croaks and blizzards of notes is stunning and oftentimes inescapable. When Attila comes out with the clean vocals on the title track you will get chills up your spine. The band captures all of their trademark bombast and more with De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive and once you dig in it's impossible to escape.

Mayhem have often been portrayed as so much schlock in recent years, but as this record shows us the band retains the pissed off madness that made them so virile when they kicked this thing off four decades ago. The rage that they show us now is the selfsame rage we will never be able to escape as true fans of the genre. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive is a powerful and exciting statement, an album that revisits a piece of art that defined a genre and which reminds us time and time again that black metal ist krieg.
