Centuries - The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding

Centuries are one of those hardcore bands that came up in the early 2010's with a forward thinking sound, toured their asses off and now are starting to come to terms with their sound and develop something grander and more exciting. A testament to all that they have crafted and a huge step forward for a group who refuse to slow down but who instead tear apart the rules of hardcore in a twisted effort to prove to us that this music is life. And it is. And that realization is exactly what makes The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding so special.

This is a record that can be surprisingly dense and it's a record that isn't afraid to touch on other genres. The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding is unafraid to  explore, but it's also very much aware of the trends of modern hardcore. It plumbs incredible depths, both sonically and emotionally and that's a huge part of what keeps me coming back. It's a record with a broad vision that shows us that their is a very real beauty to this music initially created for VFW halls. Yet within the inherent braininess of the record there are some pummeling moments of hardcore that bring us back down to earth and kick you in the teeth - it creates a sense of magic realism I can't help but to love.

The aural crush of this record is potent and hints at great things to come from these Southern Lord signees. It's rare to find a group who take both such a huge step with their second record and also who have the same confident songwriting and level of production as these guys. The Lights OF This Earth Are Blinding is the sort of record that really affords you the time to get lost in and which you can't help but to escape even as you try and find some sort of hope in the bleak realities that it so potently paints.
