Twingiant - Mass Driver

I've been following Twingiant for a long ass time now, so it seems appropriate that I dig into the recesses of their catalog to talk about an upcoming reissue of their classic 2012 release Mass Driver on Sludgelord Records. As much as this album might be removed from what the group has created in recent years, there is still something inherently fascinating about Mass Driver and its wonderfully weird story about a alcoholic vagrant in space who gets stuck on a garbage barge. I mean - if that doesn't garner your interest, I don't know what will.

The thing with this album is that it sounds simply massive. It touches on so many of the key aspects of what makes sludge metal so special and there is something wonderfully fascinating about the magic of tracks like Awake In The Hull. The vocals here have a certain girth that really sets them apart in the sludge metal world. In a genre so often defined by shoddy production values and boring songwriting, Twingiant have cut the fat and instead fabricated something that is not only potent but which also, obviously, has an enduring power, enough so that people are clamoring for it six years later. In terms of songwriting and production - Twingiant get what separates the boys from the men.

With riffs upon riffs to sink your teeth into and the sort of dried out husk of a Phoenix sound that only the desert can produce, it's hard not to fall in love with Mass Driver all over again. Tongue in cheek and aware of the inherent magic of the genre, Twingiant have continually impressed over the course of nearly a decade now, and this, their first real utterance, stands tall as an important moment in the history of the genre. Mass Driver is a thrilling listen from start to finish, and this reissue is a fun look back at a tour de force from a band who are starting to become a genre staple.
