Filii Nigrantium Infernalium - Hostia

Osmose Productions is truly a special label. They put out some of the most forward thinking and visionary metal that the underground has to offer. the latest such contribution is Hostia the 4th full length from Filii Nigrantium Infernalium (Say that 10 times fast!) a Portuguese black metal band who have been leaving no cross unturned since the early 90s. There are few bands that understand the wonderfully bleak nature of the genre as well as Filii Nigrantium Infernalium and now the release of Hostia in conjunction with another full length, Fellatrix sees the band rising to new heights.

There is a sense of pure sonic blasphemy to Hostia that makes it an endlessly addictive listen. This is not a genre meant for the faint of heart and it's hard not to fall in love with the manic and bloodthirsty magic of these songs. The crazed guitar playing only serves to accent the chaotic assault of the band and conjures up images of flaming churches and painted faces leering out from black and white screen prints. Yet within it all, Filii Nigrantium Infernalium show a greater passion for this music and conjure up a darker flame than ever before. It's strange when bands take major steps forward thirty years into their career but here we are.

This is not an album that your common metal fan is going to get in to. Hell, it might even be alienating to some black metal fans because these guys are not afraid to go a little bit over the top. The high pitched delivery on these songs in conjunction with the rock and roll vibe from the crazed solos only serves to place an accent on what this band has become. Unafraid to wear their influences on their collective sleeve and constantly pushing to new extremes, Hostia is a wild ride you won't soon forget.
