I think it's pretty well known by now that Imperial Triumphant are one of the most interesting things going on in black metal. the balls out assault and sheer terror conjured up by their music speaks to a band who understand the inherent terror of existence. In the grand style of avant garde black metal that we have seen taking a rapid rise in the past few years the chaotic and blasphemous tones of Imperial Triumphant have me mesmerized and utterly in love. This is the sort of demented black metal that keeps children up at night, and that's why we love it.
The simply frightening horns shine boldly on Vile Luxury. It's the selfsame freakish horror that made a band like sigh so good in the first place. The sense of unmitigated trauma that you feel with these songs speaks to the bands ability to invoke the darker side of human nature. The band has long focused on something sort of ethereal, out of this world and magical. The band has never feared becoming 'too weird' and on this record they occasionally push that to the limit. That being said, they very rarely stray from anything that isn't immediately identifiable as 'black metal'. Even the pure atonal horn sections rapidly bleed back into the sonic assault that defines much of this album.
This Throatruiner and Gilead Media collaborative release is a thinker to be sure. It's an album that doesn't frequently ask questions of itself, but it also doesn't get lost up its own ass. There are countless ties to old school evil black metal here but the band never sounds as raw as some of the first wave stuff. Instead they embrace a sort of cosmic horror you are going to fall in love with if you like groups like The Great Old Ones or Arcturus. Imperial Triumphant are unafraid to break the rules, but that only serves to make them all the more exciting, potent and given to pure audio decimation.
