Sulphur Aeon - The Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos

This is an absolute monster and I'm not just talking about the Elder One on the albums cover. Van Records has a storied reputation in certain elitist circles as one of the best curated labels in the world. It is an honor to be affiliated with them and it's records like this one that maintain such a high bar. The Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos is an absolute beast of a record and one that seems to constantly ebb and flow  into bolder and more demented heights. It means that Sulphur Aeon have perhaps taken the crown of bombastic Lovecraftian death metal.

The sheer scope of The Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos is what makes it such a special listening experience. These tracks careen from peak to peak and constantly hint at darker and more putrid futures. The punishing sonic assault of some of these tracks borders on terrifying and the quality of the songwriting is not to be missed. These German masters have unleashed a release that seems to be almost expansive in its approach, every track pushing genre boundaries even further and encouraging us to really sink our teeth into the bleak annihilation of Sulphur Aeon and what they have come to represent.

At the end of the day it's the thrilling guitar work that serves to make Sulphur Aeon such an exciting band. While this is certainly a group with a passion for the esoteric and who really sink their maw into the horror thing, they are moreover a group of truly stellar musicians bringing some really exciting sounds to the table. They have created a death metal record that simply reeks of intensity and which constantly encourages you to search for ever more demented approaches and descents into cosmic darkness.
