Ars Magna Umbrae - Lunar Ascension

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I, Voidhanger Records is without a doubt the best label in the avant metal underground. They seem to be able to pick out the creme de la creme of the scene and are able to uncover some wonderfully weird stuff. Such is the case with Ars Magna Umbrae, I heard their debut EP when it came out and it was a really interesting listen, but it definitely didn't prepare me for the veritable lightning in the bottle that the band has captured with their debut record, Lunar Ascension.

This is a freakish and weird masterwork. This is a record that boggles the mind and takes all sorts of bizarro twists and turns. Lunar Ascension is an album that thrives on its own inherent weirdness and the over the top grandiose mandess of the band. Lunar Ascension speaks to a fucked up and dark reality and seems to reflect on some really strange and bleak unrealities. Lunar Ascension is yet another record from I, Voidhanger that pushes the world of black metal a little bit further towards madness. They drive you towards gibbering insanity and seem to relish the darkness that seeps out of every pore.

Lunar Ascension is going to make you ask questions about the essence of occult black metal, what it is, what it can be, and what the future holds for the genre. This is a record that gets a visceral response from the listener and is incredibly creepy throughout. It sees the band in a tightly controlled environment powering through incredibly fresh, dynamic and fucked up ideas. Lost in their twisted ivory towers and looking down at us mere commoners, crushed in the oppressive riffs of this aural punishment, Ars Magna Umbrae are surely hard at work on their next jaw dropper.
